Selenite is a variety of gypsum characterized by transparent blades or sheets. Selenite, satin spar, desert rose, and gypsum flower is four crystal structure varieties of the mineral gypsum and, typically grouped, are referred to as Selenite. All Selenite is very soft and can be easily scratched with a fingernail. It occurs in various colors caused by other mineral inclusions- colorless, white or pearly, gray-brown, beige, orange, pink, yellow, light red, and even green. Also, because gypsum has natural thermal insulating properties, Selenite feels warm. Ancient civilizations believed these white transparent crystals waxed and waned with the moon. Selenite is known to exhibit chatoyancy or the cat's eye effect.
